The PHS’ third mission critical objective is the preservation of our heritage/culture. The children of the immigrants need to have a local means of being exposed to their Portuguese heritage. We have accomplished this by various methods:

1. Support the teaching of the Portuguese language
   
   a. Direct monetary contributions
   b. Underwriting of text books
   c. Underwriting of Portuguese flags/maps for the classrooms throughout MA
   
   
2. Prince Henry the Navigator Statue located at Prince Henry Park on Popes’s Island in New Bedford will serve as a permanent testament to our heritage and the impact Prince Henry the Navigator had to world exploration.
   
3. The Arts sponsorships: Windows of the Azores; Susan Melo recital at the Zeiterion
   
4. Our Scholarship Program: The process from application to final award focuses heavily on the importance of being aware and proud of your heritage.
   
5. In 2005 for our 25th Anniversary we commemorated local artist Arthur Moniz to create a collection of only 200 original prints to commemorate this occasion. The end product was a beautiful rendition of our statue and surroundings at Prince Henry Park.
